Popularity Of TV Documentaries
Popularity of TV Documentaries
The documentary genre’s popularity is surging, driven by streaming platforms e.g. Netflix & Disney+, increased accessibility and a public craving for authenticity. This makes it one of the fastest growing content categories, especially true crime, nature, and music documentaries, appealing across demographics for entertainment, education and escapism. Though production growth now outpaces demand, creating a crowded market. The genre has expanded far beyond politics and war, covering niche interests which attract a broader audience like true crime, music and pop culture.
TV documentaries are experiencing a significant demand growth. Documentaries have become a top performing genre on streaming services, growing faster than any other genres in 2020 due to the easiness to find diverse content. This is because the viewers are attracted to the real stories being told about niche interests including secrets, scandals, and true crime.
Documentaries appeal to numerous ages, however they lean towards a slightly older audience, 30+, with an equal gender appeal. This is due to an older audience usually preferring reality over fiction, wanting to learn more about certain topics that documentaries may discuss. This could also be because older viewers may prefer a more relaxed, slow-paced watch as it can be seen as more enjoyable.
Another reason the documentary genre has become more popular is because of the shift towards a higher production value, creating a more cinematic and visually interesting documentary. This helps many viewers feel like they are apart of the documentary, actively learning and listening to the details, creating an active audience.
